What to Do When Your Standby Generator Won't Start

The lights go out, the house goes quiet, and nothing happens. You walk to the generator, check the control panel, and it’s either dark or showing a code you’ve never seen before. It’s an unsettling moment, especially when you were counting on that unit to run the sump pump or keep the refrigerator going.

Most no-start situations aren’t catastrophic failures. What Your Generator’s Behavior Is Telling You

How a generator fails is more useful than the fact that it failed. Before doing anything else, observe what the unit actually did or didn’t do when it was supposed to start.

  • No crank, dead or silent panel: The engine never attempted to turn over. This almost always points to the starting battery or the starting circuit. A battery that tests fine under no load can still fail under the real load of cranking a cold engine, particularly after a long stretch of mild weather with no full exercise.
  • Cranks but won’t fire: The engine is turning but can’t ignite. This shifts attention to the fuel supply. Something is preventing adequate fuel from reaching the engine, whether that’s an empty propane tank, a closed valve, or an interruption to the gas line.
  • Starts and then shuts down within seconds: The unit reached run speed briefly, then cut itself off. This is almost always a low-oil-pressure safety shutoff protecting the engine from running without adequate lubrication. It’s not a random failure; it’s the protection system working correctly.
  • Never attempted to start at all: The unit showed no response during the outage even though the transfer switch operated. This is frequently a controller left in Off or Manual mode after a previous service visit or a manual test, rather than any mechanical problem.

Safe Checks You Can Do Right Now

A few visual checks take less than five minutes and resolve a meaningful number of no-start calls before a technician ever needs to come out. None of them require opening any panel cover or touching any wiring.

Confirm the Control Mode

Check the control panel and verify the unit is set to Auto. Off and Manual mode both prevent the generator from responding automatically to a power transfer. This setting is easy to overlook and is commonly left in a non-Auto position after a manual test or a walkthrough of the unit’s operation.

Check Your Fuel Supply

PECO serves Montgomery County for both electricity and natural gas, so your unit is likely running on one of two fuel sources: a natural gas line from PECO or a home propane tank. For propane systems, confirm the tank gauge shows fuel remaining and that the supply valve is fully open. A partially closed valve can allow enough gas for a single start but not sustained operation. For natural gas systems, confirm that gas service to the home hasn’t been interrupted. A pressure issue on the line or work done on the gas meter can cut the supply to the generator without any obvious sign inside the house.

Note the Fault Code & the Context

If the panel is showing a fault code, write it down exactly as it appears. Also note whether the failure happened during the generator’s weekly self-test exercise cycle or during an actual power transfer from PECO. These two contexts point to different underlying problems. A unit that fails only during its exercise cycle but runs during an outage behaves differently from one that fails in both situations, and that distinction helps our technicians narrow the cause significantly before arriving on site.

What the Fault Codes Are Actually Telling You

Generac controllers and other standby brands display numeric fault codes when a start attempt fails. Two codes come up regularly in no-start situations, and both are worth understanding before calling for service.

Overcrank Error (Codes 1100 & 1101)

An overcrank fault means the controller made multiple attempts to start the engine, the engine never reached run speed, and the controller locked out further attempts to protect the starter motor. This code is most often tied to a fuel supply problem: a closed propane valve, an empty or nearly empty tank, low gas pressure on a natural gas line, or a fuel shutoff that didn’t open. Confirm your fuel supply and mode setting first. If those check out, schedule a diagnostic visit rather than continuing to reset the unit. Repeated cranking with a weak fuel supply drains the starting battery further and compounds the problem.

Low Oil Pressure Shutdown (Code 1300)

A low-oil-pressure fault means the engine’s safety system detected insufficient oil pressure and stopped the engine to prevent internal damage. Check the oil level on the dipstick with the unit off. If oil is low, that’s a starting point. A unit that’s been burning or losing oil also signals a service need beyond simply adding more. If the oil level is correct, the fault may point to a faulty oil pressure sensor rather than an actual oil problem, and that requires a technician to diagnose.

When to Stop Resetting

Resetting a fault code once to confirm whether it returns is reasonable. If the same code comes back after one reset, stop. Each additional restart attempt with an unresolved underlying cause risks draining the battery further or masking a condition the controller was trying to flag. At that point, the right move is a professional diagnostic before the next outage.

Where DIY Checks End & Warranty Risk Begins

The checks above are limited to visual confirmation and reading the panel. They don’t require opening any enclosure, touching any wiring, or accessing any internal components. That line exists for two reasons.

First, safety. Standby generators operate at high voltage, carry live circuits even when the engine isn’t running, and connect directly to your home’s electrical system through an automatic transfer switch. The transfer switch isolates the generator from the utility grid and isn’t something to investigate without proper training and equipment.

Second, warranty coverage. Work performed inside the control board, the fuel system, or the battery charger by someone outside manufacturer certification can void remaining factory warranty on a unit that’s still under coverage. A starting battery that’s beginning to weaken can pass the exercise cycle and still fail when it has to crank a cold engine during a January storm. The exercise cycle is useful, but it doesn’t replicate the demands of an actual start under outage conditions.

Natural Gas vs. Propane Fuel Supply
Because PECO provides both electricity and natural gas across the county, many standby generators here are plumbed directly into the natural gas line. That setup eliminates the risk of running out of propane, but it introduces a different vulnerability: any interruption to gas service, whether from utility work, a pressure issue, or changes made during other home improvements, can cut the fuel supply to the generator without triggering any obvious alert inside the house. We see this fairly regularly following gas meter replacements or plumbing work that required shutting the gas line.

Post-Service Mode Settings
After any service visit where a technician manually tests the unit, the controller should be returned to Auto mode. Occasionally it isn’t. The generator then passes every subsequent exercise cycle without issue, and the homeowner has no indication anything is wrong until the next real outage, when the unit doesn’t respond to the transfer.

A handful of safe checks resolve many no-start situations before any service visit is needed: confirm the mode is set to Auto, verify the fuel supply is open and available, and note any fault code along with whether the failure happened during an exercise cycle or an actual transfer.
